Refund policy
When you get
your money back
Changing your mind is not a refund, it is a transfer, and transfers are free. If we cancel the night, or change it into something you did not buy, you get every dollar back. Nothing here takes away a right you have under Australian Consumer Law.
01Why it works this way
Night in Lanka is a student event with 400 seats on a boat that is paid for in advance by five societies with no float behind them. A seat you release a week out is a seat we often cannot sell again, and the money has already gone to the operator.
So the deal is simple: we do not refund change of mind, and we make it free and easy to hand your ticket to someone else instead. The name change takes a minute, works right up to 48 hours before boarding, and the new holder gets their own ticket by email.
02You get a full refund if
- We cancel the event. Every ticket is refunded in full, automatically, to the card that paid.
- We move it to another date and that does not work for you. Your ticket stays valid for the new date if it does; tell us if it does not and we refund you.
- The night changes so materially that it is not what you bought. A different DJ is not that. A different city, a different month or an event that does not sail at all is.
- We oversell. If a fault on our side means there is no seat for a ticket we sold, that ticket is refunded in full.
- You were charged twice, or charged the wrong amount. Send us the order reference and we will fix it.
- The law says so. See clause 4.
03You do not get a refund if
- You change your mind, or something comes up, or your friends pull out. Transfer the ticket.
- You do not turn up, or you arrive after the boat has left. The boat does not wait, and a missed departure cannot be resold.
- You cannot produce valid physical photo ID in the name on the ticket. This is stated at checkout, on the ticket and in the terms.
- You are refused boarding or removed for your own conduct, including arriving significantly intoxicated.
- You bought from a reseller rather than from this site, and the ticket turns out to be already used, transferred or cancelled.
- The line-up, the food or the running order changes in the ordinary way.
None of the above is us being clever about the law. If your situation is genuinely rough, ask. The committee can and does make exceptions, and a polite email with your order reference costs you nothing.
04Your rights under Australian Consumer Law
Our services come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. Among other things, they must be supplied with due care and skill and must match what we described.
If we fail to meet one of those guarantees you are entitled to a remedy. For a major failure, that includes a refund. Nothing in this policy or in the ticket terms limits that, and no line above should be read as trying to.
05How to ask
Email info.nightinlanka@gmail.com from the address you booked with, and include:
- Your order reference, which looks like NIL-2026-000123 and is on your ticket email
- Which ticket or tickets you mean, if you bought several
- What happened, in a couple of lines
We aim to answer within five business days. Sale week is the exception: if you write to us in the hours around a release, expect it to take a little longer.
06How a refund is paid
Refunds go back to the original card. We cannot send one to a different card, to a bank account or to somebody else, and there is no cash alternative.
Once we send it, the money typically appears in five to ten business days, depending on your bank. That part is out of our hands. You will get an email from Stripe confirming the refund when it leaves us.
Where we refund a whole order, the tickets in it stop working immediately and the seats go back on sale.
07Overseas cards: nothing to refund
We only accept cards issued in Australia. If you tried an overseas card, the payment was authorised and immediately released, not taken. Your bank may show a pending amount for a day or two before it disappears on its own.
There is nothing for us to refund in that case, and asking your bank to reverse it will not make it drop off any faster. Use an Australian card, or have a friend here buy the ticket and transfer it to you.
08Chargebacks
If you think a charge is wrong, email us before you call your bank. We can usually sort it the same week, and we would rather fix it than argue about it.
A chargeback raised against a valid ticket voids that ticket: it stops scanning while the dispute is open, so a ticket you have disputed will not get you on the boat. If you have already raised one and want to come anyway, tell us.
